The Edo State Government has announced that the parents of students involved in a viral assault at Igbinedion Education Centre, a private secondary school in Benin City, will be prosecuted, following an official directive for the state Police Command to investigate the incident.
State Commissioner for Information Kassim Afegbua revealed the decision on Monday, describing the case as “deeply disturbing” and confirming that a committee has been established to uncover the full circumstances behind the attack.
“It is quite disturbing when we heard it. We were just wondering what could have warranted this,” Afegbua said. “Such treatment is completely unacceptable. The students involved have been expelled, but action does not stop there. The police have been directed to ensure they face the full wrath of the law.”
Afegbua added that Monday Agbonika, the state’s Police Commissioner, has assured the government that the parents of the students involved will be required to report to the police headquarters in Benin City and will be prosecuted once the investigation is concluded.
“The incident is a wake-up call for both parents and teachers. An institution like Igbinedion Education Centre is expected to have strict codes of discipline and internal monitoring,” Afegbua said. “The fact that the attack was recorded and circulated on social media shows that without such documentation, it may have gone unnoticed. This underscores the need for vigilance in our schools.”
The widely circulated video shows two students repeatedly beating, kicking, and dragging a younger boy believed to be in a junior class. One attacker used a belt, while another stomped on the victim’s chest, leaving him crying in pain. A third student, reportedly recording the video, can be heard pleading for the assault to stop.
The motive for the attack remains unclear at this time.
