Prominent TalkSPORT broadcaster Adrian Durham has issued a direct piece of career advice to Arsenal’s teenage sensation Max Dowman, suggesting the youngster should negotiate an exit from the North London club as soon as the summer transfer window opens. Durham expressed significant concern that the 16-year-old’s professional growth could be stifled under the management of Mikel Arteta should he remain at the Emirates Stadium beyond the current campaign.
The presenter’s argument centers on the belief that Dowman’s long-term prospects would be better protected by continuing his footballing development at a different institution. To support his claim, Durham pointed toward the current status of Myles Lewis-Skelly, whose transition into the senior squad under Arteta has, in his view, been mishandled. He noted that despite Lewis-Skelly’s background as a promising midfielder who led the youth team to a cup final, he now finds himself marginalized as a fringe defensive option.
According to Durham, the path to the first team for academy graduates at Arsenal appears increasingly congested and poorly defined. He cited the recent inclusion of high-profile signings like Piero Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori in major finals as evidence that homegrown talents are being pushed further down the pecking order, even when established senior midfielders are struggling with form or fitness.
The warning comes shortly after Dowman made headlines by coming off the bench to score a decisive late goal in Arsenal’s victory over Everton, a moment that highlighted his readiness for a higher level of competition.
“Max Dowman needs to leave Arsenal as soon as possible,” Durham said as quoted by Metro UK.
“Dowman has seen Myles Lewis-Skelly’s career derailed by Mikel Arteta. He’s not even third choice left-back now – [Piero] Hincapie and [Riccardo] Calafiori ahead of him in a Wembley final.
“He was a midfielder in the youth team and got to a Youth Cup final in midfield.
“Even with [Martin] Zubimendi looking like a League One player, [Declan] Rice’s numbers are shocking, and [Mikel] Merino is injured. Lewis-Skelly isn’t going to get a look in there; he’s third choice left-back.
“So Max Dowman needs to take a look at these things and realise that he’s just another tick in Mikel Arteta’s box.”
