Democratic Republic of Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has singled out Super Eagles wingers Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze for praise following his team’s victory over Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff final.
DR Congo defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Rabat, securing their place in next year’s intercontinental playoffs.
Speaking after the match, Desabre noted that Nigeria’s tactical shape made the contest challenging:
“Nigeria used a sort of diamond shape, where Lookman and Chukwueze often dropped back inside. They changed their system during the match. We stayed in the same system, only adjusting the pressing.”
DR Congo will now represent Africa in the final qualification phase next year.
