Ace Nigerian producer and music executive Don Jazzy has described Afrobeats as “still a baby” compared to established global music genres, noting that artists are still learning and adapting to an evolving industry.
In a detailed post on X, the Mavin Records boss highlighted the skyrocketing costs of music production in Nigeria, pointing out that some Afrobeats music videos now exceed ₦20 million, with certain projects surpassing $100,000.
Don Jazzy also emphasized the importance of learning from others, citing examples such as Burna Boy’s international stadium shows and the scale of projects led by industrialists like Dangote. He encouraged emerging industry players to take notes and learn from both successes and challenges.
“This our beloved Afrobeats is still a baby genre in the grand scheme of things. We are all still learning every day as the game is ever changing,” he wrote. “If I tell you how to run a successful record label in Nigeria, take notes, even a small note, because very few have done it successfully.”
The post reflects Don Jazzy’s humility and ongoing commitment to innovation in the music industry, while also highlighting the rapid growth and rising investments within Afrobeats.
