Music executive and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has spoken out in defence of a young woman, identified as Itohan, following criticism she received online after he privately supported her health-focused initiative.
The controversy began after Itohan shared a post on social media outlining her Christmas wishes, which included settling personal debts and launching a foundation to support kidney patients. She explained that the idea was inspired by the loss of her brother to kidney disease.
Don Jazzy responded to the post by asking her to outline her needs, which she did. However, shortly after, some social media users accused Itohan of being “greedy” and questioned her intentions, with others alleging that her appeal was a scam.
In response to the backlash, Don Jazzy publicly defended Itohan, insisting that she had done nothing wrong and deserved encouragement rather than criticism.
Addressing claims that he only offers support to women, the music executive referenced a previous donation he made to a male-led tech initiative, stressing that his decision to help was based on capacity and purpose, not gender.
“Don’t do that. What exactly did she do wrong?” Don Jazzy wrote on X. “I like to help people when I can. I asked for her wish, and she stated she wants to help people too.”
He further explained that he initially reached out to Itohan privately to shield her from public scrutiny and avoid prolonged debates on the timeline.
“We all have our wishes whether big or small,” he added. “I entered her DM to try and save her from the long talks on the timeline. Also not to be like I just raised her hopes and left her hanging.”
Don Jazzy also noted that Itohan was under no obligation to publicly disclose the donation, stressing that she was not accountable to social media users.
“She didn’t need to come back to the timeline to tell you guys anything as she doesn’t owe anyone anything,” he said. “Is she a government official?”
The incident has since triggered widespread debate online, with some users supporting Don Jazzy’s stance and commending Itohan’s initiative, while others continued to question her approach.
Itohan has since expressed gratitude for the support she received and confirmed that part of the donation is already being used to assist dialysis patients. According to her, ₦350,000 has so far been spent to help two individuals access treatment.
The episode has reignited conversations around online empathy, philanthropy, and the scrutiny often faced by individuals seeking support for social causes on social media.
