Music executive and Mavin Records founder, Don Jazzy, has responded to resurfaced claims about a car accident from his early years in the United Kingdom, firmly denying suggestions that he fled the scene to evade law enforcement.
The controversy began after music industry figure Bankulli alleged that Don Jazzy abandoned a wrecked vehicle in London, removed the number plate, and ran off to avoid potential penalties. He made the claim while explaining why he omitted the incident from an Afrobeats documentary.
Bankulli recounted that the producer had dozed off after a show, crashed his car, and left it behind because the towing fee would have exceeded the cost of repairs. The comments triggered mixed reactions online, including fears from an X user who suggested the case could be reopened if Don Jazzy returned to the UK.
In a swift response on X, Don Jazzy rejected the narrative, stating that Bankulli’s recollection was inaccurate. He explained that he did not flee but instead waited for police officers to arrive at the scene. According to him, he underwent a breathalyser test, which confirmed he was not driving under the influence, after which authorities impounded the vehicle.
“Lol no panic. It’s been so long, so he doesn’t remember the story exactly,” Don Jazzy wrote. “I actually waited for the police. They came and gave me a breathalyser… I wasn’t [drunk] but the car was impounded. The fine to collect the car back was more than the cheap car, so I left it with them.”
His clarification has helped calm speculations, while reigniting conversations about the challenges many Nigerian artistes faced while trying to survive abroad long before achieving mainstream success.
