Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Lagat has announced key changes affecting three directorates within the Kenya Police.
The Directorate of Community Policing, previously headed by Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police (SAIG) Judy Lamet, has been split into two separate units.
Ms Lamet, a career police officer who has risen through the ranks, will continue as Director of Community Policing, focusing on strengthening the relationship between the police and the public.
Dolly Onyango, a Commissioner of Police, has been appointed as the new Director of the Children and Gender Protection Unit.
Hived off from the Community Policing docket, this new directorate will handle all matters concerning children and women, including cases of gender-based violence and crimes affecting children.
The DIG has also divided the Directorate of Chaplaincy and Psychosocial Support into two units, appointing new commanders for each.
Vincent Makoha, who previously led the Chaplaincy unit, has been redeployed to police headquarters at Vigilance House. Evelyne Njeri, a Police Chief and trained counselor, will now head the newly established Counselling Unit.
In other appointments, Clinton Kimaiyo, formerly the Deputy Head of the RECCE Unit, has been posted as Murang’a County Police boss.
As the county police boss, Kimaiyo is expected to lead operations against illicit brews and the invasion of private lands by criminal squatters.
He succeeds Benjamin Kimwele, who has been recalled to police headquarters.
The Rift Valley region also has a new Deputy Police Chief. Michael Ndiaga, previously serving at the Regional Headquarters in Nakuru, takes over from Joel Lekuta, who has been redeployed to the Logistics Department at Vigilance House.
