Panic erupted in the Yemetu area of Ibadan after residents discovered a suspected petroleum leak in a local well, with the liquid believed to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel.
According to a statement posted on X by the Oyo State Police Command, the report was received around 6:50 p.m. on September 6, prompting a swift response from officers of the Yemetu Police Division.
Led by the Divisional Police Officer, a Chief Superintendent of Police, the team moved to the Omikunle area where the discovery was made. On arrival, officers confirmed the presence of the suspected diesel and found a crowd of residents attempting to scoop the substance using containers.
Preliminary findings point to a possible leakage from an underground storage tank in the vicinity, which may have seeped into the well.
Recognising the high risk of fire and contamination, police immediately cordoned off the area with the support of armed personnel and members of the local neighbourhood watch. Authorities assured residents that the situation is under control and that there is no immediate danger to public safety.
An investigation has been launched to trace the source of the leak and evaluate potential environmental and health risks. The Oyo State Ministry of Environment has been alerted and is working alongside police officials to safely manage and dispose of the substance.
