PDP member and Obidient movement supporter, Dickson Iroegbu, has described the administration of President Bola Tinubu as “a total failure,” accusing it of lacking empathy and taking Nigerian lives for granted.
Speaking on ARISE News on Friday, Iroegbu said the persistent killings across the country and the government’s muted response showed “gross incompetence” and disregard for human life.
“It is fatal, Charles, it is,” Iroegbu said in reaction to US President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the Nigerian government. “Nigerians are being slaughtered daily in numbers. The president doesn’t seem to have empathy. People are dying, communities are burnt down, and we don’t see the commander-in-chief visit these places. Leadership is moving on as if nothing is happening.”
He condemned attempts by government officials to frame the killings along religious lines, insisting that “human lives matter first.”
“Forget whether you’re Muslim or Christian — lives are being lost every day, people are kidnapped and pay ransom, and yet there’s no trace of justice. Rumour even has it that governments in some states negotiate with terrorists. It’s shameful.”
Iroegbu praised Trump for “standing up for humanity” and said international condemnation of Nigeria’s security situation should serve as a wake-up call for the country’s leaders.
“Thank God, because the blood of innocent people shed has raised a man from the international community to prick the conscience of Nigerian leaders,” he said. “If this is what it takes for our leaders to wake up, then so be it.”
The PDP member accused Nigeria’s political class of forming what he called “an elite conspiracy against the Nigerian people,” criticising politicians defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“What’s the reason for these defections?” he asked. “Is it that security has improved or the economy is better? Nothing! It’s a conspiracy of the elites against the Nigerian people. They are busy politicking while Nigerians are dying.”
Iroegbu said the Tinubu government had demonstrated “gross incompetence,” adding that the international backlash against the administration had given the opposition renewed hope.
“What the president has shown, which now alarms the world, is gross incompetence,” he declared. “Even though they have captured the judiciary and the National Assembly, the global community is watching. This emboldens us in the opposition to say the government has failed. The APC coming back to power in 2023 was an aberration. They failed for eight years, and they are failing again.”
He added that the administration’s focus on early re-election campaigns “on the graves of Nigerian citizens” was unacceptable.
“The campaign is on the graves of Nigerians, and it won’t fly,” he said. “I see this government’s tenure ending quickly, even before 2027.”
Iroegbu also called for unity among opposition parties, saying they must put the people first and “muzzle their way back to the centre.”
“For us in the PDP and the opposition, this is about the Nigerian people first. When we removed fuel subsidy, we considered the people. This government removed subsidy two years ago and is still borrowing, with no cushioning effect anywhere,” he said. “If we unite, we can sack those who have disgraced and smeared our country, because indeed, Nigeria has been disgraced by the APC government.”
