Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has dismissed as false and misleading an online report suggesting that the cancellation of activities marking the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged coup attempt.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military described the publication as malicious and intended to create unnecessary tension and distrust among Nigerians.
According to the DHQ, the decision to cancel the anniversary parade was to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting abroad, and to enable the Armed Forces sustain operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The statement also clarified that the arrest and investigation of sixteen officers recently mentioned in a press release had nothing to do with any coup plot, explaining that it is part of routine internal disciplinary measures to maintain professionalism within the ranks.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its unwavering loyalty to the Constitution and to the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while urging Nigerians to disregard what it described as falsehood being spread by enemies of the nation.
It further assured that democracy in Nigeria remains strong, and called on citizens to continue supporting the Armed Forces and security agencies in their efforts to ensure peace and stability across the country.
