Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has heaped praise on Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, describing him as “a true champion” ahead of next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Panthers of Gabon.
Nigeria sealed their playoff place after a dramatic 4–0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo, with Frank Onyeka’s late goal ensuring their passage to the next stage, where they will now face a red-hot Aubameyang-led Gabon side.
Aubameyang has been in blistering form throughout the qualifiers, scoring seven goals in five matches for Gabon. The 35-year-old has also been pivotal for Marseille, netting four goals and providing four assists in eight Ligue 1 games this season.
Speaking to newsmen after Marseille’s 6–2 demolition of Le Havre at the weekend, De Zerbi lauded the veteran forward’s all-round quality and work ethic.
“He’s a true champion, a different kind of player,” De Zerbi said.
“I’m discovering him to be even stronger than I imagined. He has a lot of qualities — he’s not just a goalscorer.
He can make assists, bring speed, depth, and he’s a hard worker too… He’s a champion.”
Nigeria will face Gabon in the semifinals of the playoff on November 13 in Morocco, with the winner advancing to the final stage for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
