Spain’s national team manager, Luis de la Fuente, has tempered expectations surrounding Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, maintaining that the winger still possesses significant room for growth. These comments were delivered during a media briefing on Monday, ahead of La Roja’s international exhibition match against Egypt scheduled for Tuesday at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.
Despite Yamal’s extraordinary impact on the global stage, De la Fuente emphasized that the youngster is currently navigating a vital evolutionary period in his professional career. The manager’s perspective suggests that while the player’s contributions are already substantial, his absolute ceiling remains far in the distance.
The 18-year-old enters the March international window following a prolific domestic campaign with Barcelona, where he has amassed a remarkable 21 goals and 15 assists across all competitions. His rapid rise was further validated late last year when he secured the runner-up spot in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting, finishing closely behind the winner, Ousmane Dembélé.
“He’s in a development phase and is contributing more and more to the team with each passing day,” De La Fuente said.
