Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has accused Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal of sparking the brawl that erupted after Sunday’s LaLiga El Clásico at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The heated clash ended with Madrid defeating Barcelona 2-1, thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, while Fermin Lopez netted for the visitors.
Tensions flared after the final whistle, with 18-year-old winger Lamine Yamal at the centre of the scuffle following his recent remarks about Madrid on a YouTube channel, where he allegedly said, “They rob, they complain, they do things.”
Speaking to reporters after the match, De Jong criticised Carvajal for confronting Yamal publicly instead of handling the issue privately.
“If Carvajal wanted to speak to Lamine [Yamal], he could do so in private,” De Jong said.
“If he thinks Lamine shouldn’t say certain things, he could call him — they’re teammates with Spain. Why make a scene on the pitch?
Lamine didn’t say that they rob, not directly. I haven’t heard him say exactly that. I can understand Madrid’s players, but the reaction was exaggerated.”
The incident capped off an intense El Clásico, adding more fuel to the fierce rivalry between the two Spanish giants.
