ARISE News analyst, Dayo Sobowale, has said religion continues to play a central role in shaping Nigeria’s social and political life, as leaders call for unity, peace and security following the Eid celebrations.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Friday, Sobowale said the message of peace, unity and security emphasised by Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Eid celebration reflects Nigeria’s most pressing national needs.
He noted that while global tensions, including conflicts involving countries like Iran, Israel and the United States, continue to shape world events, Nigeria must focus on internal cohesion and stability.
According to him, the themes highlighted by the President, security, peace and unity are areas where Nigeria has consistently struggled, stressing that embracing these values beyond the Ramadan period could significantly improve the country.
“We have always been lacking in all those three. And if, for once, after Ramadan, we can change our mindset and pursue them consistently, Nigeria will be a better place,” he said.
Sobowale also addressed the broader role of religion in Nigerian society, describing it as deeply embedded in everyday life and a major influence on behaviour and decision-making.
“Whether you like it or not, religion is the driving force of all aspects of Nigerian life,” he said.
He explained that religion remains a powerful emotional and cultural force, particularly in societies like Nigeria where faith plays a central role in shaping values and social interactions.
The analyst added that religious beliefs, especially in major monotheistic faiths, often influence moral conduct through ideas of reward and punishment, which in turn shape societal behaviour.
While acknowledging debates around the role of religion, Sobowale maintained that faith continues to serve as a guiding force for many Nigerians, providing hope and a sense of accountability.
He also responded to criticisms that leaders sometimes use global crises to justify local challenges, arguing that such comparisons reflect broader human realities rather than mere excuses.
According to him, societal challenges are part of human nature and are not unique to Nigeria, noting that similar tensions exist across different parts of the world.
Sobowale concluded that Nigerians must internalise the lessons of Ramadan by promoting peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility for national security.
