Former England international David James has backed Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, describing the Spaniard as “outstanding” and capable of being the “foundation” for Chelsea’s title ambitions this season.
Sanchez, who joined Chelsea from Brighton for £25 million, came under fire last season following a string of costly errors that many pundits claimed hindered the Blues’ title challenge. However, James insists that the 26-year-old has significantly improved his performances this campaign.
Speaking to newsmen, James was asked to name the best goalkeepers currently in the league and praised the likes of Arsenal’s David Raya, Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker — but ultimately singled out Sanchez for special recognition.
“But the one I was actually going to say was Robert Sanchez. I know there are a lot of people who look at Sanchez and question his capabilities but I think he is outstanding,” James said.
“I think the one thing that he’s done this season, more so than last season, is contribute with his distribution. His long balls, similar to David Raya, have been exceptional, not only getting the team out of trouble, but actually starting attack moves.
“So I just think that we’ve got a goalkeeper there who I think will be the foundation for Chelsea’s challenge for the title.
“With Robert Sanchez they [Chelsea] have got a goalkeeper who I think could deliver for them this season.”
James further emphasized that Sanchez’s confidence and improved passing range have transformed Chelsea’s defensive setup, making him central to the team’s structure under manager Enzo Maresca.
Heading into this weekend’s fixtures, Chelsea sit fifth in the Premier League table. The Blues, buoyed by their 5–1 victory over Ajax in Europe, are set to face newly promoted Sunderland on Saturday.
