Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea would be open to a return to Old Trafford if the club moved for him in January, according to ex-Spain international Gaizka Mendieta.
De Gea, 33, left United in 2023 after 12 years at the club, during which he won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and two Carabao Cups. A breakdown in contract talks led to his departure, and he joined Fiorentina in August 2024 following a year without a club.
Mendieta believes De Gea could be tempted back despite being “happy” in Italy.
“David de Gea was very happy at Manchester United,” Mendieta told OLBG. “I would have liked him to stay, 100 per cent. I’m sure he would have liked to stay as well.
“He came back after that year out, went to Italy and was the best goalkeeper in the league. That tells you the kind of goalkeeper he is. He is still one of the best in Italy, probably internationally too.
“To go back to Man Utd? I’m sure he would consider it. He enjoyed being there. But he’s also happy where he is now.”
United have struggled for stability in goal since replacing De Gea with André Onana in 2023. Despite signing Senne Lammens this summer, manager Rúben Amorim has rotated Altay Bayındır and Tom Heaton this season.
United, who were beaten by Brentford last Sunday, face Sunderland at Old Trafford this weekend.
