Nollywood actor and filmmaker Daniel Etim-Effiong has revealed why kissing scenes are so common in Nigerian movies, linking the trend to audience demand and the realities of the entertainment market.
Speaking in a recent interview on Rubbin’ Minds, the Summer Rain actor explained that producers deliberately include such scenes because they attract viewers and generate sales.
“The average Nollywood script says, ‘kiss passionately’ or ‘hug,’ and producers do it on purpose because that’s what they’re selling, especially on certain platforms. That’s what the audience wants, it’s demand and supply,” he said.
Etim-Effiong, who has often been at the center of public debate for his romantic roles, particularly after a viral kissing scene with actress Bolaji Ogunmola, suggested that filmmakers should begin exploring other creative ways to depict affection.
“A braver way is to explore other forms of intimacy and create new ways to express affection,” he added.
Responding to critics who question the frequency of his romantic roles, the actor maintained that his performances are guided by purpose and professionalism.
“There are several other ways you can show affection. There are downsides to everything, but when you’re focused, you don’t let naysayers get to you,” he said.
Etim-Effiong also credited his faith as a major influence on his career decisions, saying he prays before taking on roles involving intimacy.
“I get all my inspiration from God. I go on my knees and pray before I go to set and kiss. Acting is a form of worship and a way to tell inspiring stories,” he shared.
The actor’s wife, Toyosi Etim-Effiong, has publicly expressed her support for his career, saying she remains unbothered by his on-screen roles.
Etim-Effiong concluded that storytelling remains his true calling, describing his transition from engineering to acting as a purposeful journey fueled by creativity and faith.
