The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has taken a significant step in reshaping Africa’s energy landscape, announcing the successful sale of 12 cargoes of refined petroleum products through international traders.
In total, the shipments amount to 456,000 tonnes, with deliveries bound for key African markets including Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo.
A milestone for Nigeria’s refining capacity
According to the refinery, the exports mark a major milestone following its ramp-up to a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day in February. The cargoes consist primarily of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), widely used as petrol, and were sold on a Free on Board (FOB) basis to international trading firms handling distribution.
This development highlights the refinery’s ability not just to satisfy local demand, but to position Nigeria as a key supplier of refined fuel across the continent.
Ending reliance on low-quality imports
The company emphasized that the exports reflect a broader shift in regional fuel dynamics. For decades, many African countries have relied on imported fuels often of lower quality to meet demand.
Now, with the Dangote facility producing Euro 5 standard gasoline and diesel, the narrative is changing.
The refinery noted that its operations are helping to:
- Improve access to cleaner, higher-quality fuel
- Reduce dependence on distant imports
- Shorten supply chains and delivery times
Boosting regional energy security
Beyond commercial gains, the refinery says its growing export footprint is expected to strengthen energy security across West, East, and Central Africa.
By supplying nearby countries, it could:
- Lower transportation and logistics costs
- Ease supply disruptions tied to global shipping routes
- Stabilize fuel prices in regional markets
At the same time, the expansion of trade ties is likely to deepen economic cooperation between Nigeria and its African partners.

As global energy markets face uncertainty, Dangote Refinery’s export push positions Nigeria as an increasingly important hub for refined petroleum products in Africa.
With production scaling up and regional demand rising, the refinery’s role could extend far beyond national borders, helping redefine how fuel is sourced, traded, and consumed across the continent.
