Panathinaikos forward Cyriel Dessers has seen his debut season in Greece brought to a premature conclusion after the decision was made for him to undergo corrective surgery. The Nigerian international has been battling a persistent injury originally sustained while on international duty during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.
The physical setback occurred during the final preparations for the Super Eagles’ concluding group stage fixture against the Cranes of Uganda. Following the tournament, the former Rangers marksman traveled to Greece to begin his recovery, with initial medical projections suggesting a two-month period on the sidelines. At the time, Panathinaikos opted for a conservative rehabilitation program in hopes of avoiding an invasive procedure.
However, recent reports from Sportal Greece indicate a shift in the medical strategy. Following the latest round of clinical examinations, it was determined that the injury had not progressed as expected through rehabilitation alone. Consequently, the club has now authorized immediate surgery to ensure the long-term health of the striker.
The 32-year-old, who moved to the Greek outfit from Scottish Premiership heavyweights Rangers last summer, had a promising start to life in Athens. In a limited sample of just five league appearances, he managed to register two goals and an assist, showcasing the offensive clinicalness that prompted his transfer.
While this development effectively ends his involvement in the current campaign, the procedure is designed to facilitate a full recovery in time for the commencement of the next season. The club remains optimistic that this definitive medical intervention will allow the veteran attacker to return to peak fitness for the 2026/27 pre-season preparations.
