Skit maker and actor Cute Abiola has denied targeting veteran filmmaker Kunle Afolayan following the controversy over the director’s recent remarks on cinema box office revenue.
Afolayan had previously criticised the marketing strategies for cinema films, explaining that he no longer produces them due to the exhausting promotional demands. He highlighted the discrepancy between box office grosses and personal income, saying, “I don’t just want N1 billion or N2 billion in the cinema that I won’t be able to personally receive N10 million from.”
The comments came after actresses Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham celebrated N2 billion and N1 billion cinema grosses, respectively, sparking discussions on Nollywood’s revenue distribution and marketing practices.
Following the debate, Funke Akindele suggested on social media that Afolayan had been “left behind” and accused him of jealousy.
Amid the reactions, Cute Abiola, a close associate of Funke Akindele, shared a post on X advising his followers to “avoid anything that will make you become an old taker.” Many interpreted this as a subtle jab at Afolayan.
In response to the backlash, Cute Abiola clarified that his post was not directed at Afolayan or anyone else in the industry.
“Just to clarify, this tweet was not directed at Kunle Afolayan or anyone in the industry,” he wrote. “It was a personal motivation based on something that genuinely inspired me and I decided to share. To everyone under this comment who picked my tweet as subbing my leader Kunle Afolayan! E NO GO BETTER FOR UNA!!!”
He reaffirmed his respect for Afolayan, describing him as a mentor and leader, and urged fans not to misinterpret personal motivational posts.
