Extension aims to ensure seamless transition as Nigeria aligns with WCO standards and new customs regulations…
The Nigeria Customs Service has extended the deadline for all beneficiaries of the Fast Track Scheme to migrate to the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, shifting the date from December 31, 2025 to January 31, 2026.
The extension was announced in a statement issued by the NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, who said the move reflects the service’s commitment to strengthening trade facilitation, safeguarding supply chains and deepening compliance with global standards.
According to the statement, the additional time is intended to give operators more room to meet all AEO requirements without disrupting their business activities. Maiwada described the decision as part of the service’s efforts to ensure an inclusive and seamless transition for every stakeholder involved.
He explained that the full migration from the Fast Track Scheme to the AEO framework aligns with the World Customs Organisation’s SAFE Framework of Standards, and is backed by Sections 108 to 111 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
Maiwada urged all current Fast Track beneficiaries who have not yet completed the migration process to begin or finalise their applications through the official portal at aeo.nigeriatradehub.gov.ng. He added that enquiries, technical assistance and guidance are available through the dedicated helpdesk via aeo@customs.gov.ng.
The spokesperson emphasised that only companies that obtain AEO certification will continue to enjoy the facilitation privileges previously granted under the Fast Track arrangement.
He described the AEO programme as a globally recognised, compliance-driven initiative for trusted traders, offering benefits such as faster cargo release, fewer inspections, reduced documentation, pre-arrival processing and greater predictability in cross-border trade.
Maiwada also announced that the NCS will hold another extensive stakeholders’ engagement session on December 18 in Lagos. The meeting will provide hands-on guidance on the migration process, demonstrate how the application platform works and address compliance-related questions.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with AEO implementation teams and receive comprehensive information on programme requirements, operational procedures and the full range of benefits.
The NCS urged all Fast Track beneficiaries to use the extended deadline effectively, attend the stakeholders’ forum and complete their transition into the AEO programme.
“This proactive involvement not only ensures compliance with applicable regulations but also enhances supply chain efficiency and sustainability,” the statement added.
Maiwada reaffirmed that the service remains committed to improving trade efficiency, boosting Nigeria’s global competitiveness, protecting national revenue and promoting a transparent, predictable and secure cargo clearance environment that supports legitimate businesses.
