Spain international Marc Cucurella has offered a critical assessment of Chelsea’s decision to terminate the contract of manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year. The West London organization opted to dismiss the Italian tactician on New Year’s Day, a move triggered by a disappointing sequence of performances that left the club seeking a fresh direction. In the wake of his exit, the Premier League side moved to install Liam Rosenior as the new head coach at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the change in leadership, the Chelsea fullback maintains that the timing of the dismissal was counterproductive to the squad’s stability. Cucurella argues that the administrative hierarchy should have exercised greater patience, allowing the campaign to reach its natural conclusion before implementing such a significant structural overhaul. The defender highlighted the disruptive nature of the mid-season transition and its lingering effects on the playing staff.
In a recent conversation with The Athletic FC, as relayed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, the European Championship winner was candid about his disagreement with the board’s mid-season maneuver.
“The moment Enzo Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,” the Spain international told The Athletic FC as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
“If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”
