The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Ovat Agbor, indefinitely over allegations of violent conduct.
The decision was taken during plenary on Thursday following a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Asuquo.
In the motion, lawmakers strongly condemned the alleged incident involving Agbor, describing the reported violent behaviour as unbecoming of a legislator and inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of members of the legislative arm of government.
After deliberations, the House resolved to place the lawmaker on an indefinite suspension from all legislative activities pending further action.
The Assembly also approved the constitution of a special committee tasked with investigating the allegations and submitting its findings to the House for further legislative consideration.
Following the adoption of the resolution, Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in compliance with the directive of the House.
Speaking on the development, the Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to maintaining discipline, dignity, and the integrity of the institution.
Ayambem stressed that members of the Assembly are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust and confidence placed in them by their constituents.
The House stated that the suspension will remain in effect until the investigative committee concludes its work and presents its report to the Assembly.
