Afrobeats artiste Cross David, popularly known as Kwate, has launched a new creative project while committing resources to charitable causes in Nigeria.
The singer recently revealed plans to release a new extended play titled From Me To You. Alongside the project, he has partnered with the Omooba Foundation to support disadvantaged individuals across the country.
As part of the initiative, Kwate has requested that the foundation distribute ₦5 million to assist vulnerable communities.
Giving Back to Society
Speaking on the initiative, the Edo State-born artiste said his decision to support charitable activities was influenced by the struggles he faced while establishing himself in the music industry.
Kwate recalled starting his career during the era when musicians relied heavily on compact discs and physical promotion, often travelling between radio stations to gain airplay.
“I have always been a fighter for success. The road to greatness is narrow,” he said. “I started music during the CD era when we had to take our songs from one radio station to another. It was not easy, but I kept pushing.”
He added that the progress he has recorded in recent years motivated him to extend help to others in need.
Rising Momentum in Music
According to the artiste, some of his recent releases have been gaining traction on digital platforms, including features on playlists on Apple Music and growing attention across social media.
Kwate explained that supporting communities that contributed to his journey is part of his personal commitment to social responsibility.
“The universe has favoured me, and I believe it is important to support the community that helped shape my career,” he said.
Career Highlights
Also known as Omini Kwate, the Afrobeats performer blends elements of hip-hop, dancehall and Afro rhythms, a sound that has earned him recognition across Africa, Europe and the United States.
He began his musical journey in Edo State before relocating to Lagos in 1998 to further pursue his career.
Kwate gained broader attention in 2010 with the release of his hit track Party Dey Here from his debut album Tami Lorobo. The song received significant radio airplay across Nigeria.
In 2012, he collaborated with singer Jawo on the track Baby Give Me More, which brought him additional recognition and award nominations.
The following year, he won the Best New Artist of the Year prize at the Global Excellence Awards organised by entertainment figures Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye.
International Exposure
Kwate’s international profile expanded in 2014 when he received nominations at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and the African Entertainment Awards Malaysia.
In 2015, he was nominated for Best Male Performer in Diaspora and later served as a brand ambassador for a telecommunications company in Malaysia, where one of his songs was adopted as a caller tune.
After a short break from music, the artiste returned in 2024 with the single On Ground featuring Black IQ. The track later received a remix with rapper Magnito, while singer Portable also contributed a verse.
Performances and U.S. Presence
In November 2024, Kwate performed as an opening act for Afrobeats superstar Davido during a concert at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
The singer has also been gaining visibility in the United States music scene. He attended events connected to the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, appeared at NBA-related events in Oakland, and granted interviews to iHeartRadio.
Industry observers say his upcoming EP From Me To You could further strengthen his presence both in Nigeria and internationally.
