Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has acquired a 25 per cent stake in Spanish club UD Almería, marking his latest move into football ownership as he continues to expand his business interests beyond the pitch.
The development was confirmed in an official statement released by the club, which said Ronaldo joined its ownership consortium led by SMC Group.
According to the statement, “Cristiano Ronaldo invests in UD Almería as part of the club’s ownership consortium led by SMC Group. He acquires 25% of the shares through CR7 Sports subsidiary.”
The club further explained that Ronaldo secured the stake through CR7 Sports Investments, a subsidiary of CR7 S.A., describing the transaction as a significant moment in its development plans.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has acquired 25% of UD Almería’s shares via CR7 Sports Investments (a CR7 S.A. subsidiary). This marks a key step in the club’s ongoing growth and the Portuguese businessman’s investment portfolio,” the statement added.
Almería president Mohamed Al Kheireiji said the club welcomed the investment, emphasising Ronaldo’s football pedigree and familiarity with Spanish football.
“We’re thrilled Cristiano chose our club to invest. He’s the greatest player in history, knows Spanish football well, and sees the potential we’re building here both the first team and academy,” Al Kheireiji said.
Ronaldo also highlighted his long term ambitions in football administration and development, stating, “For a long time, my ambition has been to contribute to football beyond the pitch. UD Almería has a solid foundation and clear growth potential. I’m eager to work with the board to support the club’s next phase.”
The deal forms part of SMC Group’s broader international expansion strategy under Al Kheireiji and comes as Almería continue efforts to strengthen their sporting project while competing in Spain’s second division.
Ronaldo’s move into club ownership adds to a growing trend of elite players investing in football institutions, positioning the five time Ballon d’Or winner for an influential post playing career within the global game.
