The Sagamu Magistrate Court has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the 46-year-old driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident linked to heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode is standing trial over a crash that allegedly claimed the lives of two of his friends. He was arraigned on January 2, before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun.
The defendant was charged on four counts, including dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
Other charges include reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the Act; driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1); and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the same Act.
The case was adjourned after the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that although the prosecution had four witnesses, only three were present in court.
Nigiwe requested an adjournment to enable the prosecution to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney-General through the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice, citing the interest of justice.
The application was initially opposed by defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, who told the court that the defence was prepared to proceed with the trial.
However, in her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.
