A commuter train derailed on Tuesday near the Spanish city of Barcelona after a containment wall collapsed onto the track amid heavy rainfall, killing the train driver and seriously injuring four passengers, authorities said.
Claudi Gallardo, an inspector with the Catalonia regional fire department, told reporters from the crash site in Gelida on the outskirts of Barcelona: “The driver has died, and four passengers are seriously injured. In total, 37 people were injured. All passengers have been safely removed from the train.”
Emergency services deployed 20 ambulances and 38 firefighter units to the scene. The derailment comes just two days after a high-speed train collision and derailment near Adamuz in the southern Córdoba province that killed 42 people.
The suburban rail line where the accident occurred has long faced underfunding and frequent service disruptions, raising concerns about safety in the region.
In a separate incident later on Tuesday, traffic between Blanes and Maçanet-Massanes, south of Girona and also part of the Barcelona commuter rail network, was interrupted after “a train axle came off the track”, Spanish rail operator Adif said in a statement on X.
