To enhance operational effectiveness and tackle Nigeria’s complex security landscape, COAS Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for closer partnerships with the U.S. and Switzerland.
The Army Chief made the call while receiving the United States Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja. He praised the U.S. Government for its long-standing support, which has strengthened professionalism, institutional capacity, and operational effectiveness within the Nigerian Army.
Several senior officers, including the COAS, have benefited from U.S. military training and education, underscoring the depth of the bilateral relationship.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu highlighted Nigeria’s readiness to draw on U.S. expertise in both kinetic and non-kinetic operations and called for expanded cooperation in doctrine development, operational planning, strategic capability, and institutional growth. Lt. Col. Moore reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to capacity building, intelligence sharing, joint planning, and non-kinetic support such as humanitarian assistance and troop welfare.
In a related visit, the COAS commended Switzerland for its support in humanitarian assistance, peace-building, and conflict prevention. Swiss Ambassador, Patrick Felix Egloff, emphasised his country’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and institutional cooperation. The COAS noted Switzerland’s role in facilitating key peace initiatives, including the release of the Chibok schoolgirls and recent rescue operations of over 300 kidnapped victims, as well as providing mobile medical clinics for frontline troops.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to professionalism, international best practices, and human rights, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in strengthening Nigeria’s internal security.
