Chelsea legend Claude Makelele has backed Moises Caicedo to be a strong contender for next year’s Ballon d’Or, saying the Ecuadorian midfielder has all it takes to become the best player in the world if he maintains his current form.
Caicedo, who joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 for a record £115 million, has justified his price tag with consistent performances for the Blues. The 22-year-old started all 38 Premier League games last season, won Chelsea’s Player of the Year award, and played a key role as Enzo Maresca’s side clinched the Europa Conference League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and secured a return to the UEFA Champions League.
His outstanding display in Chelsea’s recent victory over Tottenham Hotspur earned widespread praise from fans, pundits, and football greats, including Maresca and former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp, who described him as one of the top two midfielders in the world.
Speaking to Metro, Makelele said he was impressed by Caicedo’s talent and mentality since his arrival in England.
“I’m not surprised. I’ve been around Chelsea when he arrived, and I talked with him. I like this boy — he’s talented, powerful, and tactically very good,” Makelele said.
“He can be the leader for this team. If he continues like this, I think he can compete for the Ballon d’Or next year because he is such a good player.”
