Nollywood actor Chinedu Ikedieze, popularly known as Aki, has called on Nigerians to give mental health awareness the same level of attention as physical health, stressing that emotional well-being is crucial to living a balanced life.
Speaking in an interview with journalists, the actor said many people are silently battling internal and environmental struggles, making it essential for society to take mental health issues seriously.
“We can’t take away mental health challenges from men and women. Either it’s issues from family or personal battles within yourself as a result of the environment you find yourself in,” he said.
Ikedieze noted that it often takes discipline and self-control to manage life’s pressures, adding that speaking out can help relieve mental stress.
“It takes a lot to be a man. Your emotions can be triggered by how you handle life’s challenges. Regardless, speaking out to the appropriate body can reduce the pressure on one’s mental health,” he advised.
The actor revealed that he recently attended a mental health conference in Namibia, organised by Echoes Africa Initiatives, a New York-based charity, where he served as a guest participant.
According to him, the experience deepened his understanding of the importance of emotional discipline and self-awareness, especially in navigating daily struggles.
“The awareness has really made me understand the craziest side of life, especially in the areas we most often neglect,” he said. “It was my first time witnessing people, victims, and experts who shared their experiences and solutions.”
Ikedieze encouraged Nigerians to engage in open discussions about mental health, using creative platforms such as films, workshops, and public forums to reach wider audiences.
“Feed your mind with positivity. And please, do whatever makes you happy. Life has no duplicate!” he added.
His comments come amid a growing conversation on mental health in Nigeria, as rising cases of depression, anxiety, and suicide draw national concern. Experts have continued to warn that stigma and poor access to care remain major barriers to addressing the crisis.
Other entertainers, including singer Iyanya, have also joined the advocacy, reminding fans that public figures face emotional struggles too.
Ikedieze’s message reinforces the growing call for empathy, awareness, and action in supporting mental health across Nigerian communities.
