Following the interim suspension of its Chief Medical Director by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel, Atlantis Pediatric Centre has assured that its medical professionals acted within the scope of their duties.
The suspension also affected the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, and its anesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, following findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the son of Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
A coroner’s inquest into the incident is ongoing.
Atlantis Pediatric Centre said it received the suspension letter on March 5 and indicated it would seek appropriate professional and regulatory guidance.
“As a healthcare institution dedicated to pediatric care, Atlantis Pediatric Centre remains committed to the highest standards of medical practice, patient safety, and professional responsibility”, the statement read.
The centre emphasized that the matter is before the Lagos State Coroner’s Court and, out of respect for judicial process, it would limit public commentary. It added that it would fully cooperate with the inquest and any other lawful investigations.
Management expressed condolences to the Adichie-Esege family and assured patients, families, and stakeholders that it would continue to engage constructively with authorities while maintaining high standards of pediatric care.
The facility is also under administrative investigation following a petition obtained from the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) concerning its role in referring the toddler to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, which is alleged to have been negligent during treatment.
