Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has singled out four players for praise following Nigeria’s commanding 4-1 triumph over Gabon in Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff encounter.
Chelle highlighted the performances of defenders Calvin Bassey, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Benjamin Fredrick, and Zaidu Sanusi, noting that the newly assembled defensive line impressed in Rabat, Morocco.
Nigeria earned the emphatic victory through goals from Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, and a brace from Victor Osimhen, ensuring the three-time African champions advanced to Sunday’s final.
Reflecting on the match during his post-game briefing, Chelle expressed satisfaction with how the team handled defensive duties, despite conceding a late equaliser.
“We conceded a goal in the last minute, but we had a better chance to finish the game at the last moment,” he told reporters.
He added that the backline showed strong chemistry for a unit playing together for the first time.
“It was a new defence too. Bright, Benjamin, Calvin and Zaidu – they played well. The team was strong in defence, but we can improve every time.”
The Super Eagles will now shift their full focus to the decisive playoff final against DR Congo, scheduled for Sunday, as they push toward securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs.
