Veteran entertainer Charly Boy honoured former President Olusegun Obasanjo during the elder statesman’s 89th birthday celebration on March 5, 2026, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The event, hosted at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, saw Charly Boy make a memorable entrance, balancing a large gold gift box on his head as he approached Obasanjo.
Upon reaching the high table, the singer gently placed the gift before the former president, who revealed a towel inscribed with the message: “Baba 89 from Charly Boy.” The exchange ended with a handshake and a warm kiss from Obasanjo on the entertainer’s head, delighting attendees.
In an Instagram post reflecting on the occasion, Charly Boy shared his admiration for Obasanjo, noting how their relationship has deepened over time. He also connected the moment to his late father, who was once friends with the former president.
“Lately, I have found myself growing fond of Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. It feels like our relationship has moved to another level, the kind that warms my heart and always makes him smile whenever he sees me,” Charly Boy wrote.
Describing the atmosphere of the celebration, he said:
“The tables were full. People were laughing. Influential men and women were exchanging greetings. There was plenty of good food. Then Baba walked in, and the atmosphere changed. Respect filled the room.”
Charly Boy’s dramatic presentation, balancing the gift on his head in a style he described as “village-boy style,” drew laughter and applause from the audience. The singer reflected on the symbolic nature of the gesture, emphasizing that celebrations can be about honour and respect rather than material displays.
“Sometimes celebrations are not really about cake, champagne, or long speeches. Sometimes they are about honour, honouring a life that has seen storms, battles, and history, yet still stands strong like an iroko tree,” he added.
The birthday event highlighted both Obasanjo’s enduring influence in Nigerian history and the warmth of personal bonds across generations.
