The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has strongly condemned the abduction of pupils, students, and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.
The diocese also denounced the fatal shooting of a security worker during the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, November 21, 2025, between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., when armed men stormed the school compound.
Several students, teachers, and younger pupils were taken away in the raid, leaving the school community in shock and fear.
In an official statement signed by the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, the Diocese described the attack as “shocking and deeply troubling,” expressing serious concern for the safety and well-being of the abducted victims.

The Diocese noted that security agencies were promptly alerted and have since launched a coordinated rescue operation aimed at securing the victims’ safe return. It added that it is working closely with security operatives, community leaders, and government authorities to facilitate the rescue mission.
Calling on residents to remain calm, the Diocese urged the public to support ongoing security efforts and continue praying for the swift and safe release of all abducted persons.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting children under its care, the Diocese promised to provide verified updates as more information emerges.
“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger,” the statement added.
