Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Arsenal as one of the frontrunners to lift this season’s UEFA Champions League trophy, following their emphatic 4–0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
Goals from Viktor Gyokeres (2), Gabriel Magalhaes, and Gabriel Martinelli sealed another dominant performance for Mikel Arteta’s side, who have maintained a perfect start in the competition.
Speaking during an interview, Carragher compared Arsenal’s defensive solidity to that of Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League-winning team.
“My Liverpool team that won the Champions League were not a great team attacking-wise, but we were strong defensively. That always gives you a chance, especially when you get to the knockout stages and two-legged ties,” Carragher said.
“If you’re strong defensively, you’ve always got a chance. So, yeah, I see Arsenal as one of the four or five teams that can win this competition.”
The Gunners, who sit top of their Champions League group, will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they face Crystal Palace this weekend.
