Former Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher has posited that the momentum in the Premier League title hunt may have shifted due to a lapse in concentration from Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma. Analyzing the weekend’s events, Carragher suggested that while City’s summer acquisition faltered, Arsenal’s David Raya demonstrated the elite level of composure necessary to secure silverware. The pundit believes the Spaniard’s reliability between the posts could emerge as one of the primary catalysts for the Gunners ending their long-standing trophy drought.
The spotlight intensified on Donnarumma following Manchester City’s frustrating 1–1 stalemate against West Ham United at the London Stadium. The Italian international, who moved to the Etihad last summer as a successor to Ederson, struggled to deal with a cross from Jarrod Bowen, an error that directly allowed Kostantinos Mavropanos to net the equalizer. In contrast, David Raya was instrumental for Arsenal during their clash with Everton, pulling off a series of crucial interventions while the match was still deadlocked at 0–0, eventually paving the way for a 2–0 victory.
Dissecting the goalkeeping displays on Monday Night Football, Carragher noted that the pressure of the run-in appears to be affecting the pre-season favorites:
“I think most of us favoured Donnarumma didn’t we because of his experience and the fact he’s been there before. But there’s no doubt that Donnarumma blinked first. He made an error, corners can be difficult for goalkeepers now but that wasn’t really the case here. He wasn’t knocked out of the way or blocked, it was just really poor from the goalkeeper, he just gets it wrong and misjudges the flight of the ball. That was the goal that brought it back to 1-1 and Man City couldn’t go on to get that winning goal.”
With Arsenal now holding a substantial lead at the top of the table, the disparity in goalkeeping consistency has become a major talking point. Donnarumma’s misjudgment of the ball’s trajectory cost the defending champions two vital points, whereas Raya’s shot-stopping prowess provided the foundation for Arsenal to extend their advantage. As the season nears its conclusion, the psychological battle between the two keepers is likely to remain a defining factor in which captain lifts the trophy in May.
