Former Premier League stars Jamie Carragher, Peter Schmeichel and Micah Richards were at odds over Chelsea’s chances of challenging for the title this season during CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage.
Carragher, who has been vocal about the Blues’ goalkeeping situation, argued again that Chelsea cannot compete at the very top with Robert Sanchez as their No. 1. Richards echoed the view, but Schmeichel offered a more optimistic take.
At Stamford Bridge, Carragher pressed the former Manchester United goalkeeper directly:
“Peter, you famously signed for United and were a big difference in them going on to win the Premier League. Do you think Chelsea can win the league with Robert Sanchez in goal?”
Schmeichel, after a pause, replied: “Erm yes, and better defenders.”
Carragher shot back: “No chance, Peter. No chance!”
Richards then weighed in: “You put him on the spot there, didn’t you? He didn’t say it with conviction, did he!”
Chelsea began the season tipped as dark horses in the title race, but Enzo Maresca’s side have managed only two wins from six games, leaving them seven points off leaders Liverpool.
