Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher strongly predicted that Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca faces dismissal and will not remain in charge at Stamford Bridge for the start of the next season. Carragher’s comments followed Maresca’s public outburst after the team’s 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, where the Italian claimed the build-up to the game marked the toughest period of his tenure.
Maresca cryptically told the press that “many people didn’t support me and the team,” though he quickly clarified that he was not referring to the fans. Widely interpreted as a thinly veiled attack on the club’s board and owners, Maresca attempted to downplay the incident ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City by reaffirming his commitment to his job.
However, Carragher believes the manager’s public criticism of the hierarchy has already sealed his fate, suggesting the club is actively looking for a replacement.
“It’s not uncertain. He was speaking about the owner and the sporting directors,” Carragher stated on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.
Carragher pointed out that Maresca likely feels frustrated by the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market, especially failing to sign a centre-back after Levi Colwill sustained a major injury.
“He’ll be really disappointed by Chelsea not going into the market and buying a centre-back in the summer, when [Levi] Colwill got the big injury. “In the last few weeks, the results have just turned on him a little bit. So he’s calling something out and he wants something in public which I don’t agree with. “I don’t like people going public, whether it’s a manager or a player, you sort it in-house.”
Ultimately, Carragher emphasized that challenging the hierarchy in public rarely ends well for the coach at Chelsea.
“But the problem for Enzo Maresca is if he continues like this, there’s only going to be one winner. And it’s not him. “I don’t think Maresca is the manager of Chelsea next season. “I think when you come out and speak about ownership like that and you start going public, that’s a big problem. I don’t see him there next season.”
