Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has issued an apology to Arsenal playmaker Eberechi Eze after previously downplaying the impact the former Crystal Palace midfielder could have at the Emirates Stadium. Carragher now believes Eze is capable of propelling the Gunners toward their first Premier League trophy in 22 years, following his standout display in the North London derby.
Carragher’s reassessment comes in the wake of Eze’s stunning hat-trick during Arsenal’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The England international appeared destined for Spurs during the summer transfer window before Arsenal intervened to secure his signature, ensuring a return to the club where he developed in his youth.
With captain Martin Ødegaard sidelined through injury, Eze has stepped into a central creative role and rewarded manager Mikel Arteta with influential performances, solidifying his place in the starting lineup. The midfielder has quickly become a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s attacking structure as they continue their push in the Premier League title race.
Carragher admitted that he had initially viewed Eze as a rotational option but revised his stance after witnessing the midfielder dominate in a high-stakes derby fixture.
“When Eze came in, I thought, okay, maybe it’s not a game changer,” he said on Sky Sports.
“There were still a few great goals in there, and then he goes and scores a hat-trick. So, apologies.
“I certainly undervalued the importance of that signing because he looks like he could make the real difference for Arsenal this season and help them go on to win the title.
“And apart from the skill, he’s scoring the goals and making an overall contribution to the game.”
Eze’s form comes at a crucial stage of the Premier League campaign, with Arsenal competing against Manchester City and Liverpool in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested title battle. His emergence adds further depth, creativity, and goal threat to Arteta’s squad, strengthening Arsenal’s credentials as serious championship contenders.
