A commercial cargo ship caught fire in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday after three vessels in the busy shipping lane were struck by what authorities described as “unknown projectiles,” escalating tensions in a region already gripped by military confrontation.
Images circulating from the scene show thick black smoke billowing from one of the damaged ships as rescue operations were launched for its crew. Officials confirmed that 23 crew members aboard the vessel are being rescued as emergency teams respond to the incident.
The attacks occurred in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes each day. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz can have immediate impacts on international energy markets and shipping routes.
The incident comes shortly after the United States military reported a major operation in the area. According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces “eliminated 16 Iranian mine-laying ships” operating near the strait.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Tehran, saying Iran should “not put out any mines” in the vital shipping corridor.
In separate footage released by United States Central Command, an Iranian vessel can be seen moments before being struck by a US missile during the ongoing maritime operations.
The maritime incident comes amid a widening conflict across the Middle East. Iranian forces have continued to launch strikes targeting multiple countries in the region, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
In Dubai, authorities reported that four people were injured after two drones crashed near Dubai International Airport. Officials said the incident did not disrupt air traffic, although it marked the second drone attack in the area in recent days.
Meanwhile, Israel has launched renewed airstrikes targeting locations in Iran and Lebanon. Local reports from Beirutindicate that an apartment building in the central part of the Lebanese capital was struck during the latest wave of attacks.
Inside Iran, authorities issued a stern warning against domestic dissent as tensions mount. The country’s police chief warned that anyone attempting to protest against the government would face severe consequences.
“We will deal with them in the same way we deal with the enemy,” the official said, referring to potential anti-government demonstrations.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways in the world, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serving as a critical route for global oil shipments.
Any sustained disruption to shipping through the narrow passage could trigger significant economic and geopolitical repercussions worldwide.
Rescue operations for the affected cargo ship were continuing as of Wednesday evening, while international forces monitored the situation closely amid fears of further escalation in the region.
