Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has expressed unwavering confidence that Nigeria will elevate their performance levels following a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opener. Despite controlling large portions of the match at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, the three-time African champions faced criticism for wasteful finishing and defensive lapses that briefly allowed the Taifa Stars back into the contest.
The Beşiktaş midfielder, who wore the armband with authority, dismissed concerns regarding the team’s narrow margin of victory, emphasizing that securing the maximum points in an opening fixture remains the ultimate objective for any title contender.
“It was a good game. The first game of a tournament is always like this, about getting the momentum. It was really, really good that we got the three points, which is the most important thing,” Ndidi stated during his post-match interaction with the press.
While Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman provided the goals, the Super Eagles missed several clear-cut opportunities—including an Akor Adams header that struck the woodwork. Ndidi acknowledged the need for greater clinical efficiency but maintained that it is natural for teams to find their rhythm as the competition progresses. He noted that the squad is focusing on sharpening their final ball to ensure they “kill off” games earlier.
The victory currently places Nigeria in second position in Group C, trailing Tunisia only on goal difference. The Carthage Eagles signaled their intent with a dominant 3–1 win over Uganda, led by a brace from Elias Achouri.
