The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed satisfaction with the Federal Government’s renewed push on security and governance, saying recent developments indicate progress under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking after a Christmas courtesy visit to President Tinubu and Oluremi Tinubu, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the engagement was aimed at celebrating the season with the First Family and acknowledging efforts being made to promote national stability and development.
Okoh noted that the association was particularly encouraged by what he described as growing attention to the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians, alongside steps taken to strengthen peace and security across the country.
According to him, the 2024 Christmas season stood out as significantly calmer than previous years, when attacks on places of worship often overshadowed festivities.
“For the first time in a long while, Christmas celebrations passed without distressing reports of overnight attacks on churches”, Okoh said, describing the development as reassuring and worthy of recognition.
He added that the relative calm offered hope that ongoing security measures were beginning to yield results, even as he acknowledged the need for sustained effort.
The CAN President also reaffirmed the association’s willingness to work closely with the Federal Government to promote unity, peace, and national development.
Addressing concerns raised internationally about Nigeria’s security situation, Okoh said the administration had shown seriousness and responsiveness in confronting the challenges.
While stressing that the country still faces significant security and economic hurdles, he expressed cautious optimism that the foundations for lasting improvement were being laid.
“We believe the government has taken important steps in the right direction”, he said, adding that CAN hopes the current momentum will be sustained to deliver more tangible gains in the coming year.
