The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has voiced strong objections to the title of the new movie A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith.
In a statement signed by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President, the association said linking the sacred celebration of Christmas, which represents purity, peace, love, and redemption, with the word “dirty” diminishes its spiritual significance and trivialises a solemn religious observance.
While affirming support for creative freedom, CAN stressed that artistic expression must be exercised responsibly and sensitively, especially in a religiously diverse country like Nigeria. The body noted that creativity should foster understanding and unity, not provoke or offend deeply held beliefs.
The association also expressed concern that the film’s title passed through regulatory channels without sufficient scrutiny, calling on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to clarify how it was approved for public exhibition, particularly during the Christmas season.
CAN urged Nollywood stakeholders, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), to take a clear position on the responsible use of religious symbols and themes in entertainment. The association also called on the film’s producer, Ini Edo, to reconsider the title, issue a public apology, and ensure that sacred seasons and symbols are treated with due respect.
“At a time when the nation faces serious moral and social challenges, actions that trivialise sacred values only deepen division and erode mutual respect,” CAN added.
