The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over the handling of information by the Nigeria Police Force regarding the recent abduction of worshippers in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, warned that premature or insensitive public statements by security agencies risk increasing fear, undermining public trust, and complicating response efforts.
In a statement, CAN said it reviewed the police’s initial communication and found the approach troubling, noting that dismissing or downplaying reports before verification caused confusion and anxiety among affected families and the wider community.
“While we understand the need to prevent panic, communication must be responsible and empathetic. Denying or questioning the reports of nearly 170 worshippers only added to the distress”, the association said.
Archbishop Okoh commended the police for subsequently confirming the abductions and deploying personnel and intelligence resources to the area. However, he emphasised that security updates should always be accurate, sensitive, and considerate of their social impact.
“Official statements carry weight and influence public perception. They must balance accuracy, urgency, and empathy”, he said.
CAN further urged authorities to enhance coordination and verification procedures, treating community reports with seriousness and protecting victims from harm. The association called on all levels of government to confront insecurity decisively, warning that repeated attacks on civilians and places of worship erode confidence in the state’s ability to maintain safety.
“We appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted worshippers. Every effort, operational, intelligence, and diplomatic, must be intensified to ensure their safe return”, the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity, CAN pledged to continue supporting affected communities while constructively engaging with authorities to secure accountability, enhance public trust, and promote lasting security across Nigeria.
