Health authorities in Cross River State have confirmed a sharp rise in the number of victims injured in the Calabar gas explosion, with dozens now receiving treatment.
The incident, which occurred in the Edibe Edibe area of Calabar South, was caused by a gas leak that triggered a powerful explosion, affecting nearby buildings and leaving many residents with varying degrees of injuries.
State health officials, during an assessment visit to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, said about 60 victims are currently being managed at the facility. Medical teams have been working round the clock to stabilise patients, many of whom suffered burn injuries.
To ease pressure on the teaching hospital, authorities say patients with less severe injuries will be transferred to other health facilities within the city for continued care.
The state government has assured victims of full medical support, including the payment of hospital bills, as part of its emergency response to the incident. Officials say efforts are ongoing to ensure all those affected receive adequate treatment.
The explosion has raised fresh concerns about safety standards at gas facilities, with calls for stricter monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future.
