Nigeria’s largest street festival, Carnival Calabar, launched its 20th edition in Calabar with a colourful showcase of heritage from all 36 states.
The 18 local government areas of Cross River State also joined the festivities, bringing their unique traditions, costumes, music, and local produce to the streets for thousands of spectators.
Dubbed Nigeria’s biggest street festival, the carnival featured a mix of attractions, including the Christmas tree lighting, Carnival Calabar dry runs, the Calabar Food Festival, and a parade of bands. Live music, cultural dances, fashion displays and sports competitions further enlivened the celebrations.
The 2025 edition, themed “Traces of Time”, was chosen to reflect on the carnival’s evolution and enduring impact since its inception in 2005.
The official opening parade began at Millennium Park, where the 18 local government areas brought their heritage to life through vibrant costumes, traditional rhythms and symbolic displays.
The street carnival, scheduled to continue until December 29, will feature more cultural performances, thematic floats, and competitions among bands, highlighting Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity to both local and international visitors.
Authorities also highlighted the economic impact of the carnival, noting that it attracts thousands of tourists annually, boosts local businesses and provides a platform for artisans, designers, and performers to showcase their talents.
