For many Kenyans, cabbage remains a staple meal due to its wide availability and affordability, especially in the aftermath of the festive season when household budgets are stretched. However, this is no longer the case in Kisumu and Kakamega counties, where cabbage prices have surged sharply in recent weeks.
The go-to vegetable, which typically retails at between Sh30 and Sh50 depending on size, has now become a rare luxury.
Consumers are digging deeper into already strained pockets, with small heads now selling for about Sh70, while larger ones fetch as much as Sh150, leaving little room for bargaining. Some buyers are now negotiating with vendors to split cabbages into halves in an effort to cope with the soaring prices.
