Tragedy struck early Thursday morning on Zaria Road in Jos, Plateau State, when a bus carrying students of the University of Jos collided with a trailer opposite Unity Bank, leaving eight people dead.
Eyewitnesses reported that eleven students were on board the bus. Seven victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries in the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to eight. Three other passengers are currently receiving medical treatment. All victims were males.
According to accounts from witnesses, the bus was speeding and engaged in dangerous overtaking, causing the driver to lose control and trigger the deadly crash.
The incident was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Peter Longsan, Public Education Officer of the FRSC, said in a statement, “On 11th December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call around 0230 hours reporting a crash opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road, Jos.
The collision involved a trailer and a bus carrying 11 University of Jos students. Seven were confirmed dead on arrival, and another later died in hospital. Three others are receiving treatment.”
Reacting to the tragedy, FRSC Plateau Sector Commander Olajide Mogaji called on motorists to exercise caution, especially during night trips.
He warned against excessive speed, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and driving while fatigued or unwell, noting that these are leading causes of road fatalities.
“The government needs you alive and wants you to enjoy life to the fullest this festive season and beyond,” Mogaji said. He also urged members of the public to report crashes or other road emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number 122.
