Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has disclosed that he and late South African rapper AKA had resolved their long-standing feud before AKA’s death in 2023.
The singer made the revelation in an emotional post shared on Instagram to mark what would have been AKA’s birthday. In the message, Burna Boy reflected on their strained relationship and expressed regret that they never had the opportunity to fully reconnect or collaborate musically.
According to Burna Boy, the disagreement between them was eventually settled privately through direct messages on Twitter, a reconciliation that was never made public.
“Happy birthday Supa Mega,” Burna Boy wrote. “We fell out over bullsh*t even though we squashed it over Twitter DMs nobody knew about. We never got the chance to really link up and do what we were supposed to do.”
He added that the missed opportunity to work together remains a personal regret, noting that their plans never materialised before AKA’s passing.
The rift between both artists dates back to 2019, when tensions rose following comments attributed to AKA during a wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. At the time, Burna Boy publicly condemned the violence and warned that he would confront the rapper if they ever crossed paths.
AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was fatally shot outside a restaurant in Durban on February 10, 2023. Legal proceedings connected to his murder are still ongoing.
Burna Boy ended his tribute by paying respects to the late rapper, describing the reconciliation as unfinished business and honouring AKA’s legacy in African music.
