Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, has revealed the childhood inspiration behind his famous stage name.
In a recent conversation with tennis legend Roger Federer, Burna Boy explained that the name was born out of his early fascination with superheroes and comic books.
The singer recalled spending hours as a child sketching characters like Spider-Man and Superman, before eventually inventing his own heroes.
“I used to draw superheroes when I was younger. I used to do the comic drawing of them. That’s how I got the name Burna Boy, ’cause I wanted to be a character in the comic book,” he said.
The Afrobeats star, known for global hits such as Last Last and Rollercoaster, has since transformed that childhood imagination into a world-recognized identity.
Burna Boy has become one of Africa’s biggest music exports, with his sound transcending borders and earning him multiple awards, including a Grammy for Best Global Music Album.
